Accused killer Gable Tostee has faced a committal hearing over the plunging death of New Zealander Warriena Wright.

Ms Cooper's body was not found until about a month later, and today state prosecutor, Bernard Standish told the court the exact cause of her death could not be determined.

Mr Standish alleged that in interviews with police, Mr Hemsley told lies about what had happened to Ms Cooper, initially claiming that after they met at the hotel, she had said she was moving to Sydney with her ex-husband.

Mr Standish said in a later interview, Mr Hemsley alleged Ms Cooper had died as a result of "misadventure" — that she had "effectively choked herself" while they were having sex, because she had put a dog collar around her neck and he had been unable to remove it when she started having trouble breathing.

But Mr Standish said evidence would be called from a man who was in Casuarina prison with Mr Hemsley, who claimed the accused told him he had choked Ms Cooper with the cord of a sleeping bag after he got angry.

Neighbours found note on door, court told

The court heard in the days after the alleged murder, Mr Hemsley was seen driving Ms Cooper's car and at the unit complex where she lived.

Mr Standish said neighbours who tried to contact Ms Cooper found a note on her door, saying: "Dear visitors, I'll be away for two weeks with my wonderful new partner."

The court heard one neighbour who went inside also described the unit as "in a mess", with food left out of the fridge and gas coming from the stove.

Another friend received a text message saying "sorry I've gone for a short holiday with my new partner for a few days", while a social worker who had visited Ms Cooper's unit said a man answered the door and told her she had "gone away for a week".

'Sexual misadventure' the truth, defence says

In his opening address to the jury, Mr Hemsley's lawyer, Anthony Elliott, described his client as a drug user and "an opportunistic, small-time criminal" who had told "many lies" about what had happened.

But he said "the honest account" his client had given was that Ms Cooper died as a result of "sexual misadventure … during autoerotic asphyxiation involving a dog collar".

He said the jury would hear other accounts of what Mr Hemsley was alleged to have done, but said "the story of sex going wrong [in the caravan] … is the true story".

Mr Elliott also described Mr Hemsley as "a foul-mouthed man who said some callous things about Ms Cooper" and treated her body in a way that was "an afront to decency", but he said that did not mean he killed her.

The trial is expected to run for two weeks.
