Australians are saving hundreds of dollars on their electricity bills, according to a new report.

Fresh figures published by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on Monday showed that 1.5 million households paid 7.6 cent less for power in 2019.

The savings are due to a series of reforms brought in by the Federal Government last year which resulted in individuals saving about $219 and small businesses pocketing an extra $424 annually.

Law reforms directed providers to compare prices against the same base rate when advertising deals.

ACCC Chair Rod Sims said any residents yet to see savings should shop around.

'It continues to pay for households and small businesses on market offers to shop around, especially those with one of the big three electricity providers, because these customers often paid more than customers with other providers.'

'Energy Made easy will find the best possible plan for your usage and then it'll help you through the switching process,' he told Sunrise.

Mr Taylor also explained that customers can call their current provider and ask for a better deal.

'Companies know that competition is something that have to respond to, and we strongly encourage people to get out there and do it.'

The report also revealed that customers who use solar power paid 24 per cent, or $313, less in 2019 than people who buy power from the grid.
