A suburban footballer who was captured on camera dragging a nurse down a Melbourne laneway before laying on top of her has been found not guilty of intending to sexually assault her

But Victoria's County Court found Jackson Williams, 21, guilty of common assault over the attack at Brights Place in Melbourne in October 2018.

Judge Mandy Fox said while the incident was an "intentional and violent assault", she was not satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Williams had intended to sexually attack the woman.

The tape showed Williams, who initially had her in a headlock, holding his hand over the woman's mouth.

Williams, who plays football in the Essendon District Football League in Melbourne's western suburbs, pleaded not guilty to intending to sexually assault the woman, but guilty to assault.

"She said she couldn't manage to stand straight and he was really strong," Judge Fox said.

"She said she didn't know how long he was on top of her."

The whole assault lasted 37 seconds.

'Intoxicated' accused could not remember laneway attack, court told

The attack was interrupted by Adrian Woodgate, an off-duty New Zealand detective, who was in Melbourne on holiday with his wife and children.

During his evidence, Mr Woodgate told Victoria's County Court he and his family were on the way to catch a bus to the MotoGP at Phillip Island when he saw Williams on top of a woman.

"I could hear screaming," Mr Woodgate said.

The court heard that when asked why he attacked the woman, Williams said he was "just really intoxicated" and "wasn't really thinking".

Judge Fox today said Williams did not do anything "consistent with an intention to commit a sexual offence against her".

"He does not attempt to kiss the complainant," the judge said.

"He does not attempt to remove her clothing, or pull at her clothing or attempt to undo or remove his clothing.

"During the time he is on top of the complainant, he does not position his body so as to separate her legs."

Williams's bail was extended and he will return to court on November 12.
