Court reforms for domestic violence

Proposed court reforms will go before Parliament this week seeking to educate jurors on why it takes so long to report allegations of abuse.

The reforms will also allow complainants to give evidence in closed courts or remotely via video link, which currently requires the court's permission.

NSW Attorney-General Mark Speakman said the complexities of domestic violence compared to other crimes was important for jurors to consider.

"If say you're robbed by a stranger, you would have no reason to delay reporting that to police. But when you're abused by someone who claims to love you and you have children together and own property together, that's a very different story," he said.

"So when you consider these issues, you begin to see why victims commonly delay reporting."

Empty Sydney hotels need voucher incentives

Would you be tempted by a staycation in Sydney if the Government footed some of the bill?

Most of the tourism capital's 30,000 hotel rooms remain empty, as international visitors are banned and domestic travel is severely restricted.

Accommodation providers say Sydneysiders should be given $100 vouchers to holiday at home and support the local industry.

Similar schemes have been successful in Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Most senior MP suspended

The State Government's most senior minister in the Upper House, Don Harwin, has been suspended from Parliament.

Mr Harwin, the leader of the Government in the Upper House, was suspended after the Government failed to produce documents relating to a $250 million council grants scheme.

The Stronger Communities Fund was set up in the wake of council amalgamations, and Labor said 95 percent of the grants went to councils in Coalition-held seats.

Labor's Adam Searle said the Government has admitted there are no signed approvals for the grants.

Electronic prescriptions to roll out in Sydney

Sydney's 5 million residents will soon have access to electronic prescriptions after a successful rollout across Victoria.

Patients can receive a script via SMS or email that can be forwarded onto the pharmacy to be filled, Andrew Matthews from the Australian Digital Health Agency explained.

More than 13,000 healthcare providers have taken part in online training to prepare for the roll out, which will then be expanded to regional areas across NSW.

The Federal Government fast-tracked the scheme because of the coronavirus pandemic.
