Court reforms for domestic violence
Proposed court reforms will go before Parliament this week seeking to educate jurors on why it takes so long to report allegations of abuse.
The reforms will also allow complainants to give evidence in closed courts or remotely via video link, which currently requires the court's permission.
NSW Attorney-General Mark Speakman said the complexities of domestic violence compared to other crimes was important for jurors to consider.
"If say you're robbed by a stranger, you would have no reason to delay reporting that to police. But when you're abused by someone who claims to love you and you have children together and own property together, that's a very different story," he said.
"So when you consider these issues, you begin to see why victims commonly delay reporting."
