The Victoria Racing Club have announced no fans will be allowed to attend the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse next week. In a post on Twitter, racing minister Martin Pakula branded the decision a 'mistake', after earlier saying 500 people would be allowed to attend the event.

The Victoria Racing Club have announced no fans will be allowed to attend the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse next week.

The city is still grappling the second wave of COVID-19, with authorities making the announcement on Sunday afternoon.

The race that stops the nation normally hosts 100,000 punters at Flemington, but this year the grandstands will be empty.

The decision comes after the Victorian government on Wednesday backflipped on their decision to allow spectators at the Cox Plate over the weekend.

'It was a mistake, given that other restrictions remain in place, and we've heard the community feedback,' he tweeted.

Pakula added that the initial decision had been 'motivated only by respect for the occasion and a desire to mark a small step on the path to reopening'.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews apologised for his government's controversial decision during his covid briefing on Thursday.

The initial plans would have seen up to 1,250 people at the carnival over the two days when including jockeys, racing staff and media - compared to the usual 38,000.
