A number of schools across Sydney have been evacuated after receiving threatening emails claiming suspicious packages were on the grounds.

The NSW Education Department confirmed a "small number of high schools" had been targeted and evacuated.

"The schools have activated their Emergency Response Plans. Police have been notified," a spokesperson said.


"The department will work closely with NSW Police and will provide support to staff and students as required.

"Further updates will be provided as the situation develops."

NSW Police confirmed an operation is underway and no injuries have been reported.

Colo High School was among the schools targeted and said students doing an HSC exam were disrupted.

Willoughby Public School was also targeted, and a statement to parents said all staff and students were safe.

"We have been advised to conduct an off-site evacuation and are taking students to our evacuation point under police guidance," the note said.

There was a HSC Legal Studies exam scheduled for 9.30am today which is likely to have been disrupted. The Visual Arts exam is due to take place at 1.55pm.
