A coroner has recommended robust head injury training for all players, parents and staff, following an inquest into the 2016 death of a rugby league player in NSW.

The inquest found that Grant Cook, 28, died after sustaining a head injury while playing the game he loved.

His father Geoff is now calling on the government to introduce new laws to protect athletes who have sustained a concussion.

"I love the game, but I think they can protect the game and they can protect the player," Geoff Cook told 9News.

Grant, a father of two, was playing for the Murwillumbah Mustangs in northern NSW when he was tackled, and later collapsed.

Geoff, meanwhile, wants a new law for all levels of the game – requiring athletes to be taken off the field until they're cleared by a doctor.

"I thought the coroner could have gone a little bit further today and recommended there be legislation in sport, in Australia," Geoff said.

A week after Grant's death, the Mustangs went on to become local premiers, dedicating their win to his memory.

The coroner said the resolve and resilience shown by the team reflected just how highly Grant was regarded.
