Daniel James Morcombe (19 December 1989 – 7 December 2003) was an Australian who was abducted from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland , on 7 December 2003 when he was 13 years old.

The parents of Daniel Morcombe have welcomed a grandchild who was born on the annual date which honours the murdered Queensland schoolboy's memory — known as Day for Daniel.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe celebrated the news of their grand-daughter Elise May Morcombe's arrival on the Daniel Morcombe Foundation's Facebook page.

The baby girl was born to Daniel's brother Dean and his wife Alice on Friday, October 30.

Her birthday fell on the annual day of remembrance for Daniel this year, which is held on the last Friday of October.

The parents of murdered Queensland schoolboy Daniel Morcombe listened today as a court was told he was killed "almost certainly within an hour" of being Mr Morcombe said he had not heard from his son, "a very shy boy " who would never initiate conversation with a stranger, since that day .

"Welcome Elsie May Morcombe, born yesterday on Day for Daniel."

"Congratulations to Alice and Dean all doing well. Love Nana and Pa," the couple posted.

It is the 15th annual Day for Daniel.

The day of remembrance is also Australia's "largest day of action to raise awareness of child safety, protection, and harm prevention," according the foundation's website.

Daniel was 13-years-old when he was abducted from a bus stop in 2003 on the Sunshine Coast.

His body was found in nearby bushland in 2011.

His killer, Brett Peter Cowan, was sentenced to life in jail with a minimum non-parole period of 20 years on March 14, 2014.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe launched the Daniel Morcombe Foundation in 2005 to continue their message on child safety.

Recently, the foundation has been working with schools to identify, then act, when young people show dangerous sexual behaviours.
