Drivers in Sydney and Brisbane have been urged to fill up on petrol ahead of a major price hike this weekend.

Fuel watchers at CommSec, the Commonwealth Bank's online stockbroking firm, on Tuesday warned both major capital cities would see prices soar this weekend.

CommSec senior economist Ryan Felsman said fuel prices had reached the bottom of a discounting cycle and would increase dramatically.
