Scott Morrison has snapped at Karl Stefanovic after the Today show host grilled the prime minister about a prisoner swap to free a British-Australian academic locked up in jail.

Kylie Moore-Gilbert was released in exchange for three Iranians on Wednesday, after more than two years in jail for spying.

Mr Morrison told Today he was 'thrilled and relieved' that the consular teams and officials had secured Dr Moore-Gilbert's release.

'She is an extraordinary, strong and courageous and intelligent person. That's enabled her to get through this awful ordeal,' Mr Morrison said on Thursday.

Stefanovic asked if the three Iranian prisoners are convicted terrorists but the prime minister said he would not be willing to go into detail.

Mr Morrison reiterated his priority is the safety of Australians.

'The way we are able to be successful in these arrangements is we deal with them discreetly but I can assure Australians we would never do anything to prejudice the safety of Australians,' he said.

'Any suggestion that there has been prisoners released in Australia or anything like that is completely false.'

After 22 months, she was transferred to the notorious Qarchak prison, widely regarded as the worst women's prison in Iran.

She was one of several Westerners held in Iran on internationally criticised espionage charges.

State TV aired a video of Dr Moore-Gilbert in a grey hijab on the day of her release.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne released a statement on Thursday, saying Dr Moore-Gilbert's release had been 'an absolute priority' for the government.
