A Victoria Police sergeant has been hospitalised and four women taken into custody following a serious alleged assault in Melbourne early yesterday.

The female sergeant and male constable responded to a noise complaint from a party at a short-term rental stay on Malvern Road in Glen Iris just after 5am yesterday.

When the officers arrived they saw a blue Mazda 3 leaving the address and followed the car to Osborne Avenue, where they intercepted it.

The driver got out of the driver's seat and moved to the passenger seat where she allegedly refused to undergo a breath test or get out of the car.

A short time later the driver and her three female passengers got out of the car and argued with the officers before allegedly assaulting them.

The injured officer , 25, a five-year veteran of the force, was taken to hospital after the alleged assault , but has since returned to work. Melbourne has been shocked by a spate of violent incidents in recent months, which included attacks on police , armed robberies, home invasions and bashings.

The women continued to assault the sergeant by kicking her after she was knocked to the ground, police said in a statement.

Other police units attended and arrested the driver and her three passengers.

A 20-year-old Melton South woman, 21-year-old Point Cook woman, 22-year-old Burnside Heights woman and a 20-year-old Deer Park woman have been charged with multiple offences.

The charges include assaulting police, intentionally causing injury and unlawful assault with all four bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on July 29.

The sergeant is still in hospital recovering with concussion, bruising to her ribs and a sprained ankle.

The constable received minor injuries.
