Australia New harbour tunnel could see drivers paying more tolls

Drivers could be slugged with a toll both ways on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Harbour Tunnel after the Western Harbour Tunnel was today given the green light.

Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance, said the project includes a 6.5 kilometre tunnel, with three lanes in each direction, which will help slash travel times from North Sydney to Sydney Olympic Park by up to 20 minutes.

"The Western Harbour Tunnel will take pressure off the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Harbour Tunnel, Anzac Bridge and Western Distributor corridors to revolutionise transport capacity in and around our city," Mr Constance said.

"The new tunnel will start at the new Rozelle Interchange and head under the Harbour to the Warringah Freeway, and will integrate new and existing public transport connections.

Coupled with a completed Westconnex network, travel from North Sydney to Olympic Park would be almost entirely underground and while time will be saved on travel, Mr Constance did not rule out drivers feeling it in the hip pocket.

"We are considering all options at the moment, we'll come back to the community with the tolling strategy very soon," Mr Constance said.

At present, tolls only apply on the Harbour Bridge and Harbour Tunnel travelling south.

This costs from $2.50 to $4, depending on the time of day, but with the new Western Harbour Tunnel to be tolled in both directions – and with an estimated $14 billion price tag - the government is now considering whether drivers on the bridge and existing tunnel should cop the same treatment.
