Guarding the memory of 16 Mile Camp's role in WWII defence of Darwin

Guarding the memory of 16 Mile Camp's role in WWII defence of Darwin Almost 80 years after the bombing of Darwin, the plan to defend the city and fall back for fear of a Japanese land invasion still teaches valuable lessons. After Japanese planes attacked Darwin in a World War II raid on February 19, 1942, resulting in an estimated 235 deaths, surviving Australian and American soldiers were sent to build a stone fortress on a hot, bush ridge and anxiously wait for the enemy to come to them.It is thought more than 1,000 Australian and American soldiers were stationed at the 16 Mile Camp — a defensive position 19 kilometres east-south-east of Darwin — in what is now the suburb of Johnston.

Governesses of rich children . Birth of a popular sport. Textile business links. A nice-sounding building. The initial steps of commerce. So far twelve actors have played the Doctor. Another reason the show has been running for so long is that there is no main storyline, it is very much episodic, each episode telling a story of a separate adventure. So as long as the writers of the show keep coming up with new planets for the Doctor and his companion to visit, and new alien villains for them to defeat, the show can continue forever.

Turning to the 2020 election, there are multiple known instances where election workers were caught entering wrong numbers into the system that inflated Biden' s vote county relative to trump. The director of a Canberra childcare centre accused of defrauding the business of as much as $500,000 has been refused bail.

Police have charged Weston Creek Children's Centre director Emma Morton with 23 counts of obtaining property by deception, amounting to $160,000 in stolen funds.

But, following a raid of Ms Morton's home in Campbell this morning, officers said they believed Ms Morton may have taken more than $480,000 in total.

"Police expect to lay additional charges in the coming weeks and do not believe any other people were involved in this activity," a statement read.

"At no time was the care of the children compromised as a result of this woman's alleged actions."

Police are liaising with federal regulators to ensure the childcare centre can continue operating.

Facing the ACT Magistrates court today, Ms Morton did not enter a plea, and was refused bail.

The Weston Creek Children's Centre website describes Ms Morton as the director of the centre for more than 20 years.

She will return to court in March.
