Two Brisbane high schools could be merged to make way for a new inner-city primary school that was first controversially proposed to be built at Indooroopilly State High School.

Toowong's Queensland Academy for Science, Maths and Technology (QASMT) could be merged with Coorparoo Secondary College, which has low enrolments, allowing the new inner-west primary school to be located at the QASMT campus.

Maiwar Greens MP Michael Berkman said Queensland Education Minister Grace Grace had confirmed the Education Department was considering alternatives to its proposal to build a new inner-west primary school at Indooroopilly State High School, including moving QASMT to Coorparoo Secondary College "given its space and low enrolments".

Mr Berkman said the Education Department's consultation process had been "clunky, unfairly skewed, and lacking in sufficient information for residents to properly consider the proposed location in comparison with other sites.

'Nothing has been ruled in or out'

In a statement, an Education Department spokesman said "nothing has been ruled out or in at this point".

The spokesperson said the new inner-west school was vital to meet the future needs of the community and to relieve enrolment pressures on Ironside State School and Indooroopilly State School.

Mr Berkman called for the department to reopen consultation on several "viable" nearby sites including QASMT, the SES Depot, Shell service station and some land near the former Toowong Bowls Club, and the Tricare site at Taringa.

"From feedback I've received over the last few months at my community meeting and pop-up offices, from an informal survey and hundreds of emails with local residents, it's clear that while the additional primary school capacity is urgently needed, we'd rather see this done right than just done quickly," he said.
