Victoria Police have arrested a 58-year-old man over the brutal killing of an elderly man and his sister more than 30 years ago.

Doris McCartney, 71, and Ronald Swann, 69, were found dead in their home in Keith Street, Moorabbin, on October 23, 1989.

They had been assaulted but police did not know who killed them or why.

Police offered a $1 million reward for information into the case just over a week ago.

Victoria Police said the man was arrested in Rowville, in Melbourne's south-east, early this morning.

Family beg for information about case

When the reward was offered, the family spoke about their anguish at not knowing what had happened.

"There's not a day in 31 years that I haven't thought about it," Ms McCartney's son Ian McCartney said.

Ms McCartney's daughter, Patricia Newman, pleaded with the person responsible or anyone with information to come forward.

"I appeal to you please — if you know anything — please come forward," she said.

"Please, I beg you."

Doris, who was deaf from the age of 15, was a widower.

Ron, a WWII veteran, moved to Moorabbin to support her.

The case was reviewed by the Homicide Squad two years ago and new information came to light that led police to believe they were close to finding the killer and the motive for the attack.

Police believe someone who knew Ms McCartney went to the house before there was an altercation.
