Cardinal Edward Idris Cassidy , a longtime Vatican diplomat and official, has died in Newcastle, Australia, at the age of 96. Cassidy was president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity from 1989 until his retirement in 2001, when he returned to Australia after more than 30 years as a Vatican nuncio and curial official. As head of the Holy See's office of Christian unity, Cassidy , together with the Lutheran World Federation, was responsible for the drafting and signing of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification in 1999.

The Vatican 's former ambassador to France went on trial for alleged sexual misconduct. Ventura's trial comes the same day that the Vatican is releasing a much-awaited report into Theodore McCarrick, a once-influential American cardinal who was defrocked by Pope Francis in 2019 after a Vatican investigation confirmed decades of rumours that he was a sexual predator.

The Australian served for 33 years in the Holy See's diplomatic service before returning to Rome to run the administration of the Vatican State.

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference said the cardinal died in Newcastle on Saturday morning.

A Vatican investigation into ex- Cardinal Theodore McCarrick has found that a series of bishops, cardinals and popes downplayed or dismissed reports that he slept with seminarians. The two-year internal enquiry came from the Vatican on Tuesday, as Archbishop Luigi Ventura went to trial following allegations of sexual misconduct. In the investigation, it was determined that Pope Francis merely continued his predecessors’ "naive" handling of the predator McCarrick until a former altar boy alleged abuse.

"Few other Australians have had such a profound impact on the Catholic Church on the international stage and I'm sure he will continue to inspire Church leaders for many years to come," he said in a statement.

Cardinal Cassidy was born in Sydney in 1924 before being ordained 1949 and serving in the Wagga Wagga archdiocese until he left to study in Rome three years late.
