"The blue oval Ford has been a major provider of the pursuit vehicles for highway patrol for over some 30 years. These cars go back well and truly to probably the late 1960s and 70s."

From the lurching 1960s XT Falcon 500 V8, to the similarly-square XD, more-rounded EA and comparatively sleek BA, highway patrol officers across Australia have been treated to stints behind the wheel of some of the nation's highest-rated muscle cars, more familiar to Mount Panorama than suburban streets.

Ford ended more than 90 years of car manufacturing in Victoria in October 2016 when it shuttered manufacturing plants at Broadmeadows and Geelong.

The closure was followed in 2017 by Holden and Toyota.

Without the availability of suitable locally-manufactured vehicles, police forces across Australia have turned to imported options, including the BMW 5-Series and Chrysler 300, for their pursuit car needs.

CLM 232 will be "decommissioned" - lights and sirens and markings removed - before going to public auction.
