Parking inspectors could soon refuse to hand out fines in Melbourne over an ongoing pay dispute.

Melbourne City Council employees are bargaining for a salary increase and are likely to vote to 'ban parking fines' on Wednesday.

Members of the Australian Services Union, which also include garbage collectors and gardeners, are also considering stop-work measures under its 'un-Capp our wages' campaign.

The union said more than 1500 employees are threatening industrial action to force Lord Mayor Sally Capp to negotiate pay rises.

A shortage of truck drivers in Tasmania and nationally is causing major challenges

A shortage of truck drivers in Tasmania and nationally is causing major challenges Demand for freight around the state and across the strait continues to rise, but are there enough truck drivers to keep things moving? The shortage is leading to increased competition for drivers across state lines and with industries outside the freight and logistics sector.

The union said the average council worker earned $48,000 while the mayor has had a four per cent pay rise over the last three years, raking in $200,870 annually.

The chief executive of the council, Justin Hanney, is on $498,000 a year.

The ASU wants council employees to be given a four per cent increase, matching the Mayor's automatic pay increase which is set by the state government.

The union said council employees had worked hard during the pandemic and deserved a wage increase as living and housing costs increase.

'ASU members at the City of Melbourne served on the front line through 2020,' said ASU secretary Lisa Darmanin.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Melbourne City Council for comment.
