A Melbourne man has been found not guilty of murdering a cabinet maker over an unpaid renovation bill and accusations of shoddy work.
A jury on Friday found Samir Mayhoub, 56, not guilty of murder or the alternative charge of manslaughter over the stabbing death of Bunyamin Oksuz at Campbellfield, in Melbourne, in 2019.
Crown prosecutor Melissa Mahady had previously alleged Mr Mayhoub stabbed Mr Oksuz, 61, in the chest when the cabinet maker arrived at his customer's home to recoup the $8400.
The cabinet maker of 30 years had badgered Mr Mayhoub for months after receiving partial payment for kitchen and laundry work, Ms Mahady told Victoria's Supreme Court in May.
Fans claim Harry Kane deserved Premier League gong over Ruben Dias
Fans have reacted with anger after Manchester City defender Ruben Dias was named Premier League Player of the Year - as they believed Harry Kane was more worthy of the award. Portuguese defender Dias was crowned as the league's best player by England's top-flight on Saturday after being a standout player in Pep Guardiola's defence as City romped to the title. But supporters expressed their disapproval of the choice for the award, even though the prize was partly decided by a fan vote, as they believed England captain Kane - who finished the year as top goalscorer and assist maker - deserved it more.
Mr Oksuz brought a friend to Mr Mayhoub's home in May 2019 and a fight broke out in front of the accused killer's horrified family.
Mr Mayhoub thought the work was shoddy and grabbed a knife.
This was solely to protect himself and his family, his barrister Ruth Shann said previously.
The altercation was captured on Mr Mayhoub's home CCTV before Mr Oksuz collapsed and died on the street.
"I don't know how the knife got there. I wasn't trying to murder him or anything, it just happened," Mr Mayhoub told police.
"I only protect my family, that's all."
Biden admin asks Supreme Court to reinstate death penalty for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev .
The Department of Justice is asking the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court ruling and reinstate the death penalty for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. In a 48-page brief filed Monday, the DOJ argued that a court of appeals erred in vacating the death penalty over the trial court's failure to have prospective jurors asked about the specifics of what news reports they had seen about the case, and the refusal to allow what the defense believed would be mitigating evidence related to the role Tsarnaev's brother may have played in a separate triple-murder case.
