The spokesperson said 13 workers were sent to the Howard Springs facility for 14 days of mandatory supervised quarantine, under a direction by the Chief Health Officer.

The ABC understands the vessel involved was a Singapore-flagged container ship, which remains in Darwin.

On Saturday, the department also confirmed a Darwin family that returned from a regional Victorian hotspot earlier in the week spent several hours in the community before authorities realised they should have been sent into supervised quarantine.

The family touched down in the early hours of Monday morning and was allowed by screening staff to return to their home.

A spokesperson said the family was directed into the Howard Springs facility on Monday afternoon after the error was picked up.

"Upon assessment of the individual circumstances, the Acting Chief Health Officer has confirmed there is low risk to the community," the spokesperson said.

The regional Victorian hotspot declaration was lifted on Tuesday but the declaration for greater Melbourne remains in place.
