The Australian authorities have elected to extend a lockdown in the country’ s largest city as the infection tally from the latest outbreak nears 900 and initial restrictions fail to deliver the intended impact. While Australia has previously avoided the worst of the pandemic, there are now 71 Covid - 19 patients in New South Wales hospitals, 20 of whom are in intensive care units. One patient is in their 20 s and two are in their 30 s . The neighboring state of Victoria has also seen its largest increase in cases in weeks, after furniture movers carried the virus interstate from Sydney.

South Australia brings in test requirements for people entering from Victoria

South Australia's health authorities say they are monitoring the coronavirus situation in Victoria.

They have warned residents to do the right thing, with police Commissioner Grant Stevens flagging potential new restrictions.

People entering South Australia from Victoria will now have to get tested on arrival, and are banned from attending high-risk locations such as aged care homes for 14 days.

Commercial transport and freight drivers entering South Australia are now required to get a COVID-19 test within 24 hours of arrival.

Freight drivers coming into the state will need to produce evidence they have had a negative COVID-19 test within 48 hours of their arrival.

"We will be meeting again to talk about whether or not the evolving situation requires any further steps," Commissioner Stevens said.

AMA backs Western Australia's border restrictions with Victoria

Western Australia enforced new restrictions on travellers from Victoria on Wednesday afternoon.

Those arriving from Victoria must now self-quarantine for 14 days.

They must get a COVID-19 test when they arrive, and on day 11 of quarantine.

Australian Medical Association state president Mark Duncan said the new requirements were necessary to protect WA.

"The Delta variant is highly contagious and it is better kept out," he said.

Queensland on alert after positive test result in traveller who recently left the state

A traveller who flew overseas last week has sparked a public health alert in south-east Queensland.

Late on Wednesday afternoon, authorities overseas told Queensland Health that someone who left the state last Friday had tested positive to COVID-19.

The person had been in the community prior to departure.

Casual and low-risk exposure sites have been identified, including several shops at the Riverlink Shopping centre at North Ipswich, a restaurant in Inala and locations at Brisbane International airport.

NT brings in new restrictions for SA arrivals,  holds off for Victoria, regional NSW

The Northern Territory Chief Health Officer has not announced any new COVID restrictions for Victoria, but he has warned he is closely monitoring the state's growing number of cases.

New directions were issued on Wednesday night for anyone who has been to an exposure site in the town of Tailem Bend, south-east of Adelaide.

Anyone who has been there must get tested and quarantine for 14 days.

Travellers from Victoria are still under quarantine and testing directions that were issued last month.

Under the three-tiered system, anyone who's arrived in the NT and visited a high-risk exposure site must complete supervised quarantine.

The list of these sites has grown to nearly 20 in the last day.

Health authorities are yet to announce any further restrictions for regional New South Wales, but a range of hotspots remain in place.

ACT residents must check in at shops and other retail settings from midday

ACT residents will have to check in to shops, takeaways and other venues from 12:00pm using the Check In CBR app.

This will be mandatory for anyone over the age of 16.

Check-ins will be required for all retail settings, including supermarkets, department stores, petrol stations, takeaway services, public transport and taxi, hire car and ride share transport services.

Previously, people needed to check in if they were going to be somewhere for longer than 15 minutes, but that condition has been removed.
