The most damaging winds took hold in South Australia on Tuesday afternoon before spreading up into NSW and northeast Victoria on Wednesday. There are powerful coastal wind warnings in place for multiple states as much of Australia wakes to another icy morning.

A cold front crossing eastern NSW is generating powerful winds along the coastline, also bringing showers to several areas later in the day.

The brisk winds are also moving the showers inland and bringing heavier snowfall to southern NSW, parts of Victoria and Tasmania.

In NSW, a severe weather warning is in place for parts of the Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan and Illawarra, with meteorologists predicting damaging winds, abnormally high tides and damaging surf in these areas.

Victoria has gale warnings in place for the Gippsland Coast and South Australia has strong wind warnings in place for the Far West Coast, Upper West Coast and Lower West Coast.

On Australia's west coast, a trough and low over southern parts of Western Australia are generating gusty rain, also causing light to moderate showers to stretch across to South Australia.

There are strong wind warnings in place for the Geraldton Coast, Lancelin Coast, Bunbury Geographe Coast, Leeuwin Coast, Albany Coast, Esperance Coast and Eucla Coast.

In Queensland, there is a strong wind warning in place for the South East Gulf of Carpentaria, Sunshine Coast Waters, Moreton Bay and Gold Coast Waters and these will continue into Thursday for Gold Coast Waters.

There is also a coastal gale warning in place for the Roper Groote Coast in the Northern Territory.

Tasmania has strong wind warnings in place for the South East Coast, South West Coast and Central West Coast.
