A couple are in police custody after they allegedly breached 14-day hotel quarantine directions to go out for dinner.

The 54-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man travelled from locked-down Victoria and arrived in Western Australia on Saturday, where they were told to self-quarantine for 14-days after stopping at a Eucla border checkpoint.

Both the man and woman were approved to stay overnight in appropriate accommodation in Norseman before proceeding to Rockingham, in Perth's south, to complete the rest of their quarantine period.

Covid-19 hotel quarantine could last '3 or 4 years' in Australia .
Jane Halton, a former public servant who conducted a review of the quarantine system last year, said hotel quarantine could last even longer if a new Covid-19 variant evades vaccines. 'In three or four years' time I'll be quite surprised if we're using these kinds of arrangements unless for example there's a very nasty new variant,' she told ABC radio on Tuesday morning. Ms Halton revealed that quarantine will be required until Australia reaches herd immunity to Covid-19. 'We don't know how long it will take us to have the level of coverage of vaccines but also the protection right across the community,' she said.
