A man has died following an accident involving two cars and a truck on the Barton Highway in Canberra earlier today.

ACT Policing said the crash occurred about 11:30am, west of the Gungahlin Drive bridge.

The three drivers were the only people involved in the crash, and no passengers were travelling in the vehicles.

The drivers of the cars both sustained injuries and one died at the scene.

The other injured driver was initially trapped in their car and had to be freed, before being taken to hospital by paramedics.

The Barton Highway is expected to remain closed in both directions between Murrumbateman and Yass after a head-on car accident. Two people have died in a crash between a car and a truck on Main South Rd, near Rolleston.

ACT Policing Detective Acting Superintendent Donna Hofmeier said the driver of the truck was unharmed, but had been taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

It is not yet clear what caused the crash, which happened in the middle of the highway.

Police believe the truck was travelling northbound when the collision took place, while the two cars were turning right onto the Barton Highway.

She said a number of people stopped to offer assistance to the crash victims, including at least two nurses who happened to be driving past at the time.

"We would like to thank them. My members are very thankful," Detective Acting Superintendent Hofmeier said.

She described the scene as "confronting" for emergency services personnel.

"ACT Policing send their sincere condolences to the family of the deceased," she said.

The ACT Major Collision Team is investigating.

The death is the ninth fatality on ACT roads so far this year.

The section of the highway where the crash took place is expected to be closed for some hours.
