Unhealthy scepticism

Unhealthy scepticism Good morning, early birds. Victoria's AMA has said COVID-deniers and anti-vaxxers should opt out from the public health system if they are infected, and Australia has come last in our climate pledges and performance compared to 30 of our fellow developed nations. It's the news you need to know, with Emma Elsworthy.Meanwhile in Queensland, police are trying to understand how infected Gold Coast resident Duran Raman travelled to Sydney and Melbourne during the peak of each city’s outbreak before heading home, the Brisbane Times says. It is not clear when Duran, who is 34 and played for Broadbeach’s AFL team, contracted COVID on his interstate jaunt.

Queensland has recorded no new locally acquired COVID-19 cases , but Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk wants a number of regions to pick up their lagging vaccination rates. Ms Palaszczuk said today's results were "unbelievable" and thanked Queenslanders for doing the "right thing". "We want to see more in Logan, Beaudesert, more on the Gold Coast , Mackay and central Queensland and in our Cape communities , our remote indigenous communities ," Ms Palaszczuk said. "I want to see all of those rates uniform across our state — that would give me greater comfort when we have further

Officials said he returned from interstate to his apartment at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast on October 11.

Mr Raman, who is in his 30s and unvaccinated, had not checked-in using the QR code tracking system since September 18.

Authorities were struggling to communicate with him and Queensland Health said this morning that he was in a serious condition in the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said Mr Raman was still on oxygen.

"He's on high-flow oxygen, and he'll need to go into intensive care," she said.

"That is terrible. He is a very young man who was not vaccinated, and is now extremely sick."

The discovery of the case broke the state's 15-day streak without a locally acquired case.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said 73.66 per cent of Queenslanders aged over have had their first vaccination and 58.72 per cent were double dosed.

"We've had 6,330 tests in the past 24 hours and Queensland Health has administered 15,686 vaccinations yesterday," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"We really need to push up those vaccination rates."

Speaking from Marsden in Logan, the Premier said vaccination rates were lagging in the region.

"Logan this is a wake-up call, come and get vaccinated there is no excuse," she said.

She said just 36 per cent of eligible people in Marsden and Creastmead were vaccinated.
