Melbourne's 'Freedom Day' isn't what it seems

Melbourne's 'Freedom Day' isn't what it seems Premier Daniel Andrews has snubbed Melburnians as they prepare to leave what has been the longest period of Covid-19 lockdown on the planet. Instead, smiling health bureaucrat, Acting Chief Health Officer Ben Cowie, addressed the daily press conference on Thursday to declare their hard lockdown would officially end at 11.59pm. With 70 per cent of Victorians now vaccinated, Melburnians will from Friday be allowed to freely travel within the metropolitan region.

The Victorian government confirmed that shoppers will not have to be double jabbed until 90 per cent of the state have been vaccinated, which is expected to be on November 24.

Retail staff will need to have had at least one jab by Friday and both by November 26.

When asked about the confusing detail in the government's roadmap, Covid-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar said it was down to 'timing'.

Unvaccinated tennis stars WILL be allowed to play at Australian Open

Unvaccinated tennis stars WILL be allowed to play at Australian Open The Women's Tennis Association on Sunday told its unvaccinated players in an internal email they will need to spend two weeks in hotel quarantine before competing in Melbourne. By contrast, the email said fully-vaccinated players will have 'complete freedom of movement' other than being tested for Covid before and after their arrival. The grand slam is set to be held in January with defending men's champion Novak Djokovic - a strong critic of Australia's quarantine system who has said he is 'opposed to vaccination' - chasing a record 21st title.

The Australian state of Victoria will “lock out” unvaccinated people from participating in the economy, Premier Dan Andrews has announced. Victoria is currently under draconian lockdown restrictions, with residents of Melbourne – who make up the vast majority of the state’s population – living under a 9pm to 5am curfew, forbidden from leaving their homes except to work, buy groceries, or get a Covid-19 vaccination. When the lockdown is lifted, Premier Dan Andrews said on Sunday, future restrictions will apply only to those who are unvaccinated .

'We've given a bit more time and space for retailers to get back and moving again,' he said on Wednesday.

'We are sending out a very clear signal that says if you're going to be active in these retail environments post 90 per cent, you're going to need to get yourself vaccinated.'

Mr Weimar added the enforcement of vaccine mandates would be up to the retailers once the 90 per cent target was hit, but encouraged those who hadn't yet been jabbed to avoid busy retail settings.

'We would absolutely discourage anybody who is not vaccinated from going into any of those retail settings,' he said.

Premier Andrews also said the 'grace period' was offered because earlier shoppers were told they would not need to be fully vaccinated.

'We have changed that. The fair thing is to give people some time,' he said.

Michigan's Whitmer faces accusations of 'illegal' campaign contributions

Michigan's Whitmer faces accusations of 'illegal' campaign contributions Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has amassed nearly $4 million in excess campaign contributions for her 2022 reelection bid, reports showed late Monday. Normal state contribution limits permit individuals and political action committees (PACs) to donate up to $7,150 per candidate during an election cycle.

And now, the trucking industry could face a shortage of the labor force as the vaccine mandate goes into effect. Companies are now beginning the administration to delay the mandate until after the holiday season. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki laughed off the supply chain crisis by mocking the fact people wouldn't be able to get their goods – like exercise equipment – in time for the holidays. Biden has made one of the biggest initiatives of his presidency so far to get unvaccinated people the coronavirus jab.

The country’s flagship shopping mall on the Red Square was the first vaccination station in Russia to be opened outside a medical institution. Direction signs posted among the window displays state that the station is situated on the second floor, on the premises of a former bookstore. It was the world’s first registered Covid-19 vaccine. But almost immediately after its registration, a feeling took hold in Russia and abroad that there was something wrong with it. The trouble was that it was registered “ under limited conditions” - in other words, without having undergone lengthy trials.

'It does take a little bit of time and we just have to allow and give people a clear opportunity to get the first and the second dose.'

Under the current restrictions Victorians have to be double jabbed to enter pubs, bars and restaurants as well to attend appointments at hairdressers and beauty clinics.

Up to 30 unvaccinated people can attend weddings, funerals and places of worship.

Thursday marked Victoria's deadliest day in the pandemic with 25 Covid-related deaths and 1,923 cases.

About 77 per cent of Victorians aged 16 and over are now fully vaccinated.
