Union secretary Aaron Cartledge says work on the $80 million project in Adelaide's CBD should have been suspended as the temperature hit 42C on Saturday.

"Once the temperature reaches 37C and beyond, workers should not be out there working on roads or on building sites," Mr Cartledge told ABC radio on Tuesday.

However, Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said all precautions were taken to ensure worker safety.

"We have safety officers patrolling the site making sure they have access to time-outs, water, shade and they can make sure their health and wellbeing is prioritised," Mr Mullighan said.
