Human remains found in Western Australia's far north have been identified as a 41-year-old man who has been missing for more than two years.

Damien Seseve Turia, known in the Port Hedland community as 'Black Cat', was last seen riding a blue quad bike in Wedgefield on February 29, 2016.

Police say DNA testing has confirmed the identity of the remains, which were found in dense mangroves at Lumsden Point in August 2017, when the area was dug as part of earthworks for a Port Authority container facility.

Further remains were uncovered during a police excavation last month.

Homicide Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Tom Mills says Mr Turia's death is being treated as suspicious.

He said the victim had been living an itinerant lifestyle for more than seven years before he went missing, and was well known to local police.

"He was occasionally known for stealing things from around the area to sell for scrap," Det Snr Sgt Mills said.

Mr Turia's family first contacted police with concerns for his welfare on March 9 2016.

He also missed a court appearance in April 2016.

The Yamaha Grizzly quad bike was missing for some time after Mr Turia is believed to have died, before it was eventually found and returned to its owner who sold it online.

Police have asked for public help to locate the quad bike and for any information on Mr Turia's last movements.
