The footage begins after the shark had already circled him once, and then began a pursuit as Mr Gerke makes to leave.

For a while, the water looks calm and serene, with only Mr Gerke's heavy breathing interrupting the lapping of sea waves against the side of his kayak.

The peace doesn't last long, as the shark re-emerges from under the water, a little too close for comfort.

Gerke posted the video to his Facebook page 'Ken Gerke, Tournament & Adventure Mr Angler', talking about his excitement at getting the footage rather than the fear of being chased by a great white shark.

The chase added excitement to his Saturday morning adventure which he described as 'slow' for fishing.

He wrote: 'Please excuse the language, panicked breathing, and shaky footage...but I'm sure considering what happened you can understand my excitement and fear.'

Mr Gerke went on in his post to discourage those who might call for sharks to be culled, saying: 'its their backyard...I'm only visiting'.
