Brazilian police have issued an arrest warrant for the ex-partner of Sydney businesswoman Cecilia Haddad and, for the first time, revealed how she was allegedly killed.

Haddad’s body was found floating in the Lane Cove River, north of the Sydney CBD, in late April just hours after she had spoken to friends over the phone.

The former mining executive’s ex-lover Mario Marcelo Santoro was then found to have slipped out of Australia, leaving Sydney for Rio de Janeiro, on the same day her body was located.

An arrest warrant was issued in Sydney for Mr Santoro over the alleged murder, however Brazilian authorities were not immediately prepared to do the same because the country does not have an extradition treaty with Australia.

Today, the Brazilian Homicide Division confirmed in a statement, translated from Portuguese to English, that police had spoken to Ms Haddad’s relatives and issued a warrant for Mr Santoro’s arrest.

“The Homicide Division began the investigation by listening to relatives of the victim, Cecília Müller Haddad, as well as providing expert analysis of some documents that the family of the victim Cecília Müller Haddad provided,” the statement said.

After the warrant was issued, Brazilian police conducted searches of Mr Santoro’s Rio de Janeiro home, as well as the home of his parents in Copacabana, but were unable to locate him.

The 40-year-old spoke to New South Wales detectives in the wake of Haddad's death and was initially listed as a person of interest.

Haddad's death came just weeks after she ended her relationship with Mr Santoro.

In June, Haddad’s mother Milu Muller said she had spoken to her over the phone on April 28 and had heard what she believed to be Santoro clamouring to be let into her apartment.

Ms Muller said she and her 38-year-old daughter were discussing the former mining executive’s tax returns when Mr Santoro appeared outside Ms Haddad's apartment, demanding to be let in.

"I heard Marcelo’s voice outside, saying he wanted to come in,” Ms Muller said.

"So she told him that if he didn’t go away she would call the police.”

The next day, Haddad’s friends had reported her missing before her car was located unoccupied nearby and her body was later discovered in the Lane Cove River.

Now an arrest warrant has been issued for Mr Santoro in both Brazil and Australia, authorities overseas say they will continue to investigate the alleged murder until they locate him.

“Police teams from the Homicide Division will continue to investigate until they locate and arrest Mário Marcelo Ferreira dos Santos Santoro,” the Brazilian police statement said.

“The Homicide Division, at the beginning of the investigation, requested, through Brazilian interpol, the collaboration of the Australian Interpol to provide and provide information on the investigation of the murder of the victim Cecília Müller Haddad carried out by the Australian police.”
