Video footage shows Simon Breheny, 30, trying to leave his Melbourne workplace through the fire exit, but a man lying on the ground is blocking the door's entrance.

Mr Breheny, who works as policy director at a think tank, politely asked the man to move, saying, 'Excuse me mate, I need to get out.'

The man moved but then, after the businessman left the building in Collins Street in Melbourne's city centre, he says he was chased by him.

The enraged man then attacked Mr Breheny by pushing him to the ground where his glasses were smashed, he claims.

Mr Breheny managed to take a picture of the thug before he escaped.

The attacker was wearing black jeans, a red t-shirt and had tattoos on both arms.

Police are urging the public to speak to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 if they have any information.
