  SA introduces free meningococcal vaccines for kids in Australian first South Australia will become the first state in the country to introduce a vaccination program for the B-strain of the deadly meningococcal disease. From October 1, children under four will be able to get the Meningococcal B vaccine for free, while from early next year students in Years 10 and 11 and young people aged 17-20 will also have access to the free program.It follows a report from an expert group developed to find the best possible approach to combat the disease.

Tragically, however, a teenager has died from a suspected meningococcal infection in Hobart . The Adelaide baby was rushed by air to Adelaide from Roxby Downs in a critical condition on Wednesday morning.

A Hobart teenager has died from a suspected meningococcal infection.

Tasmanian health authorities were advised of the girl's death after laboratory tests showed evidence of the disease.

The Tasmanian Health Service (THS) said a small number of people who were in contact with the girl have been provided with antibiotics in case they are carrying the infection, but it said linked cases were uncommon.

The wider circle of social and other contacts will be provided with information about meningococcal disease.

The girl died in Hobart on Thursday.

It is the state's first case of meningococcal for the year.

The last death in Tasmania was a West Australian teenager who died at the Royal Hobart Hospital in August last year.

Lloyd Dunham, 19, was on holiday in the state when he died from the W-strain on the disease.

Its not known what strain of the disease is involved in the Hobart teen's case.

The THS said the state's Population Health Services was responding to this case in line with national protocols.

The coroner is investigating the death.

Meningococcal disease fears grow for Tasmanians with vaccines months away, as calls mount for subsidies .
With meningococcal disease vaccine in short supply, the Tasmanian Government admits the recent cases are "worrying", as those affected by the disease in the past call for more help for those who cannot afford immunisations.
