Police are searching for a man and a woman after the stabbing of a teenage boy in a supermarket car park in Sydney's inner west.

The 16-year-old was stabbed in the stomach and hand just before 7:00pm at the Woolworths on Darling Street in Balmain.

Police said the boy did not know the couple and they understand the offender used a knife.

Witnesses have told police the boy was simply going to the supermarket with his brother to buy groceries.

The man police are looking for is described as Caucasian, in his late 20s, 182 centimetres tall, large build with ginger hair, and last seen wearing a red jacket.

Police are looking for a person and a girl after the stabbing of a teenage boy in a grocery store automotive park in Sydney’s inside west. The 16-year-old was stabbed within the abdomen and hand simply earlier than 7:00pm on the Woolworths on Darling Road in Balmain .

A description for the woman has not yet been given to police.

The boy is currently being treated at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Inspector Gary Coffey said the attack was "ferocious".

"[It's] certainly not something that would normally occur in this area," he said.

A witness who did not want to be named was about 50 metres from the attack and said the man in the red jacket took off down Palmer Street.

"The [police] dogs went chasing after him."

The victim required specialised medical treatment at the scene.
