A 14-year-old girl has been charged with stabbing an older female student in the bathroom of a North Adelaide school.

Officers attended the school about 3:00pm on Wednesday in response to reports a student had been stabbed.

Police arrested the Year 9 student and later charged her with aggravated intentionally causing harm and five counts of unlawful threats.

She has been refused police bail and is expected to appear in the Adelaide Youth Court today.

The injured Year 12 girl was taken to the Women's and Children's Hospital for treatment to a laceration to her shoulder.

The injury is not life-threatening.

Counselling to be offered to students

Catholic Education assistant director Michael Kenny said it was a "regrettable but a very isolated incident".

"Appropriate care and support is being provided to all those involved, including the staff and the students and we will have counselling and other arrangements on site tomorrow to support the school community," Mr Kenny said.

"And obviously the wellbeing of the girls involved, their families and the broader school community remains our priority and our focus at this time."

He said the school had a very good reputation.

"I would never expect anything like this in my dreams," he said.

The incident comes just over a week after a stabbing at Renmark High School, in South Australia's Riverland.

An 18-year-old woman charged over the stabbing was remanded in custody.
