A Brisbane man claims he was mentally ill when he killed Korean woman Eunji Ban as she walked to work in 2013.

Alex Reuben McEwan has admitted killing Ms Ban in Brisbane CBD in November 2013, but pleaded not guilty to murder.

His lawyer has argued in his Brisbane Supreme Court trial his schizophrenia made him unable to control his actions.

Three days before Ms Ban's death, McEwan laid bare his mental health issues in a conversation with his mother Ruth, the court heard on Tuesday.

Ruth McEwan testified they agreed he would get mental health treatment after he told her about the sphere.

"He said sometimes when he comes home late ... he's just sitting in a park because he feels like he's not normal, not like other people," she said.

"He just sits for a while. And then he said he can't see left from right and he's got a sphere rolling around and around his head. Because it's got no sides, he can't make it stop.

"And he needs got to make it stop. That's what he said."

Ruth McEwan said her son would "make everyone smile" until around 15 years of age when what she believed was depression caused him to become withdrawn.

McEwan entered a plea of guilty to manslaughter at the start of the trial on Monday, which was rejected by prosecutors, who argue he intended to kill her.

Ms Ban was found in a Brisbane park near her Roma St Parklands unit with head injuries so severe she drowned in her own blood, the trial has heard.
