Perth couple Gillian and Michael Harvey, who are a couple of months into a year-long break with their two daughters Sophie, 4, and Chloe, 1, were among thousands of people waiting on the beach looking for a way to get away from an island which had no power and was running low on supplies.

Having spent the night sleeping in the open air on the highest point on the island, Ms Harvey said they waited five hours in the sun as people scrapped to get on to any watercraft that arrived.

"Boats kept coming, small ones, and we decided they were not safe to take our babies on them.

"They looked like they were going to topple with the amount of people on them."

When a bigger ferry arrived, she begged a staff member to let them get aboard with their two children.

"Every few minutes I kept begging him saying please take the baby, she is scared, he said 'wait, wait' again," she said.

"After about 30 minutes in the heat and so much pushing, the baby was roasted as she was strapped to me I asked again and he said: 'I promise I will help you'.

"Those words will never leave me, I was crying with relief."

The Irish-Australian couple had spent more than 10 hours getting to the island on Sunday, and had only been there for a couple of hours when the quake hit.

"We were only out [of our accommodation for] 15 minutes before it happened, we were so lucky we were not inside as some of the restaurant's roofs had fallen down and crushed people.

Ms Harvey said there was widespread panic on the beach as they feared a tsunami was on its way.

"Then the aftershocks started to happen, we were concerned for a tsunami," she said.

"Then someone said the tsunami warning had been triggered and everyone was running for high ground.

"The only problem with getting to the hill was we had to walk through buildings and pass all of the dead and injured bodies and that was horrible."

Now back in Bali with little more than scratches, Ms Harvey said she and her husband were at a loss as to what to do for the rest of their trip.

"We are very shook up and confused, we don't know what to do now," she said.

"The kids are terrified of shaking now and my four-year-old keeps talking about it."
