A young boy discovered wandering alone in a south Sydney laneway overnight has been reunited with his family.

The boy, who police believe to be aged between 9 and 11, was found at 12.40am in Wicks Lane, Kogarah, wearing long, grey pyjamas with Marvel characters printed on them.

He had no shoes on.

The laneway is located near St George Hospital and St George Police Station, as well as the Kogarah train station and nearby shopping strip.

St George police searched the area with the child but were unable to find his parents or carers.

On Saturday morning, police confirmed the boy's mother had been located.

Earlier, police released a photo of the boy and are appealing to the public to help find those looking after him.

Police said the boy suffers a medical condition and has not been able to identify himself or give officers any clues about his identity or home.
