A five-month-old baby had broken bones, a fractured skull and kidney failure in a shocking case of neglect that left him fighting for life, a court has heard.

The boy had suffered a fractured skull, legs and ribs and also had bruising and nappy rash.

He was also dehydrated.

The baby's condition upon presentation to hospital prompted a police investigation, with officers swooping on the couple's home yesterday.

Their lawyer told the court today they'd contest the charges and lodged a bail application, which was initially granted by Magistrate Yoong Fee Chin, however, prosecutors challenged the decision.

Another bail application has been scheduled to be heard in the Supreme Court on Monday.

The charged man and woman have been remanded in custody until then.

A relative of the family told Nine News today the family had moved home about a month ago and was aware the baby had gone to hospital but didn't know why.
