For the health-conscious Victorian family, an avocado was an obvious choice for a flying machine.

"I was sitting around the table just bored and I saw the event on Facebook and decided to draw something up," Josh said.

"We are really into fitness and healthy eating and it just came into my head first."

News that the entry was one of about 35 chosen and that they would be the only team representing Victoria came as quite a surprise.

"I did not expect to be pushing my mum off a pier," Josh said, denying that he would be using the opportunity to take revenge for any unpopular parenting decisions.

Kay, described as "up for anything", will be pushed 30 metres by her family to the platform edge before trusting that the machine will soar through the air.

"This is probably the most extreme thing that I have ever done," she said.

"I'm nervous but I'm pretty excited about the whole thing as well. I just want to get in there and give it a go and see if it will fly."

The machine took 200 man hours over two months to build and weighs 110kg.

The teams will be judged on flight distance, creativity of the craft and showmanship when they take the plunge on Saturday at Mrs Macquaries Point.

The first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1992 and has since been held at locations across the globe.
