A young mother accused of murdering her four-month-old daughter will stand trial next year after pleading not guilty to the charge.

Cassandra Doohan, 18, was charged with her baby Anastasia Hand's death in May 2017 after she was found unresponsive by the child's father in her cot at the couple's Capel home.

Prosecutors alleged the baby suffered a "catastrophic brain injury". She died in Princess Margaret Hospital four days later.

In the Supreme Court of Western Australia on Thursday it was revealed the cause of the baby's death was not in dispute, but who was responsible for the death was.

After he was finished getting dressed the mother allegedly asked him to bring the baby over to her bed so she could say good morning to her.

Mr Hand went to pick the baby up from her cot and found her unresponsive.

Ms Doohan, who has been remanded in custory since her arrest, is due to go on trial in the Supreme Court of Western Australia from June 4, 2019.
