As Chris Dawson travelled to Sydney on Thursday one man never left his side.

Not on the Qantas flight into Sydney Airport, nor in the back seat of a blue unmarked police car headed for the Sydney police station where the former teacher and first grade footballer would be charged with the murder of his wife.

Detective Senior Constable Daniel Poole was Mr Dawson's constant chaperone on his journey to Sydney on Thursday, and the one credited for providing the fresh set of eyes needed to investigate the alleged murder of Lynette Dawson, 36 years after her disappearance.

Detective Senior Constable Poole has been behind the investigation ever since, quietly building a reputation as a meticulous, hard-working and committed investigator.

It is understood the young detective uncovered new leads, culminating in a brief of evidence being sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to review in April.

One month later Ms Dawson's disappearance became the subject of the popular podcast, The Teacher's Pet.

He also thanked the public and the media for their assistance, acknowledging that the podcast had led police to two additional witness statements; described by Commissioner Mick Fuller as "not critical" but "co-operative" to the police case.

The Unsolved Homicide Unit was formed in 2004 and is investigating more than 500 cold case murders in NSW.

Up to 43 detectives are assigned to the unit, which has developed a framework for prioritising cases, re-examining witnesses and analysing where new technology may be able to improve on previous investigative techniques.
