Scott Morrison commits to new anti-corruption commission

Scott Morrison commits to new anti-corruption commission Having come under sustained pressure from crossbench MPs, Scott Morrison unveils an integrity commission. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a new anti-corruption commission, having come under sustained pressure from the balance of power crossbench MPs. Labor, the Greens and minor parties have long campaigned for a corruption watchdog, arguing current systems are woefully inadequate. During the final sitting weeks of the parliamentary year, Mr Morrison had said his Government was not against a national anti-corruption watchdog but described it as a "fringe issue" being pushed by the Opposition.

In the wake of the Prime Minister’s extraordinary intervention early in the week to thwart the will of local preselectors by insisting that Craig Kelly be re-endorsed for the seat of Hughes – despite having antediluvian views that would just about make Tony Abbott blush – there was a wonderful exchange in the Senate on Tuesday.

Senator Jenny McAllister: “Given Mr Morrison has refused to save Jane Prentice, Ann Sudmalis, and Senators Molan and Gichuhi, but has today intervened to save Craig Kelly, how does Mr Morrison decide when to intervene? Why is there a quota for clowns, but not for women?”

Australia's 30th PM told Sydney radio station 2GB he doesn't seek advice from his predecessor anymore, instead opting for the views of John Howard. Senator Cory Bernardi: “Point of order. You can’t refer to Members of Parliament as ‘clowns’.”

Senator McCallister: “The Prime Minister called you all ‘Muppets’!”

Senate President Scott Ryan: "Order! I actually couldn't hear the second part of that question due to noise from my right. So, if there was something unparliamentary, I'd ask it to be withdraw . . .”

Senator Bernardi: “Senator McAllister suggested that the Prime Minister failed to intervene in the preselection of clowns. It’s simply inappropriate and Senator McAllister knows. She should withdraw.”

Scott Morrison summons Liberal MPs to after-hours meeting to discuss changes to leadership spill rules

Scott Morrison summons Liberal MPs to after-hours meeting to discuss changes to leadership spill rules The Liberal Party currently has no set method and no party room constitution dictating this. The meeting is still underway. One Liberal source told the ABC the move was designed to make it harder to dislodge Mr Morrison as Liberal leader after the election. A Liberal MP said the move was in response to feedback from marginal seat holders. The Labor party already has rules to prevent leadership spills. A minimum of 60 per cent of the Labor caucus must vote to remove a leader if the party is in Opposition. To remove a Labor prime minister, 75 per cent of the caucus vote is needed. More to come.

A big week for brands

This has been a momentous week for this newspaper group as, for the first time in 180-odd years we are no longer officially under the banner of the Fairfax name. To mark the occasion, I wrote to the Fairfax family scion John B. Fairfax recording my sorrow at not keeping the name, whatever the corporate structure is at the top, and he immediately wrote back chronicling his, and his family’s view.

“I, as a fifth generation member of the family that ‘made’ The Sydney Morning Herald, lament the passing of the Fairfax name from its publishing affiliations. Ever since young Warwick did his deed in 1987, there have been many emotional moments, not least this last one where the corporate barons have decided that a brand name that has lived through all sorts of tyranny, should be buried. I find the decision extraordinary. There are, if I may say so, some malevolent individuals who are enjoying being at the graveside. I acknowledge that change is inevitable but unless you have direct involvement, tradition and respect become difficult to protect.”

For the record, Nine’s chief executive Hugh Marks disagrees there is any problem at all with losing the Fairfax name, telling your humble correspondent: “For me we want to invest in brands that audiences engage with. And that’s the mastheads– [Sydney Morning Herald, Age etc,] – not Fairfax.”

Cultural differences

The most retweeted tweet in Australia this year? I thought you’d never ask. I have put in square bracket the rudest word in the English language to spare you, but chronicle that Twitter Australia has formally advised it came from @thomas_violence, and has been RT-ed nearly 570,000 times. Take it away, Mr Violence: “I love little cultural differences, like how Americans are super offended by the word [c&*!] but here in Australia we're super offended by school children being slaughtered with automatic weapons.”

The gamekeeper shouts, “Dinnae drink thon water, mun, it’s foo o’ coo’s shite ’n’ pish.”

The man replies, “My good fellow, I’m English. Be a good chat and repeat that in the Queen’s English.”

Australian jailed by UAE on spying charges appeals to Scott Morrison for help A Sydney man accused of spying on behalf of Qatar and detained in the Middle East for over a year has made an emotional plea from jail for Prime Minister Scott Morrison to help him return to Australia. Naim Aziz Abbas was arrested in Dubai in October 2017, accused of spying on behalf of Qatar, and is now being held in the Al Wathba prison facility outside Abu Dhabi. Relatives of the Iraqi-born Australian citizen have previously pleaded with the Federal Government to intervene in his case, fearing the 65-year-old could face the death penalty if found guilty of espionage.

“The word God is for me nothing but the expression of and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of venerable but still rather primitive legends. No interpretation, no matter how subtle, can [for me] change anything about this.” - Albert Einstein, in a letter written in 1954 that was to be auctioned last week.

“This has been a great anguish to the Australian people.” - Scott Morrison about the revolving door for Australian prime ministers.

“Fortunately Mr Terrorist . . . Mr President.” - A slip of the tongue by Foreign Minister Marise Payne in the Senate.

“Labor doesn’t need a conscience vote, because every member of the Labor Party believes that it’s wrong to discriminate against children.” - Deputy ALP leader Tanya Plibersek after Scott Morrison said he would allow a conscience vote on a law to strip religious schools of the right to expel gay students, after the Coalition and Labor failed to agree on the terms of a bill.
