Ambulance officers rescued 18 children from cars in sweltering weather on Thursday and  Friday as parents continue to put their kids at risk.

The mercury soared to 35 degrees on Thursday and 38 on Friday. Inside a locked car, the temperature can up to be 20 to 30 degrees hotter, putting children at risk of heat stroke and death.

The figures drew a stark warning from Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville on Friday afternoon.

“And please, every single parent, do not leave your child in the car. You have only moments in which you may lose a loved one. Do the right thing by your kids.”

The interior temperature of a car can get hot very, very quickly, shooting up 20 degrees in only five minutes on a hot day. Leaving the windows down does not have a significant cooling effect, according to the Child Accident Prevention Foundation.

Young children are more sensitive to heat, and at risk of heat stroke, than older children and adults.

The foundation advises parents to never leave a child in a car without adult supervision, even for running a quick errand.

It advises members of the public who notice a child in an unattended vehicle to call triple zero.
