They aren't even teenagers yet, but these four boys are about to carry the weight of one of the biggest musicals in the world on their shoulders.

Omar Abiad, Wade Neilsen and Jamie Rogers, all 12, along with 10-year-old River Mardesic, will share the titular role in Billy Elliot the Musical when the production returns to Australia in October.

Based on the hit film with music by Elton John, the musical premiered in Australia in 2007 with seasons in Sydney and Melbourne.

Thanks to adjustments made to the show's design, this tour, which opens at Sydney's Lyric Theatre in October,  will travel all over Australia and make its debut in cities like Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Following its spectacular first tour in Australia , the 10th Anniversary Tour of Billy Elliot arrives in Sydney this October for a strictly limited 10 week season. Billy is directed by the award-winning Stephen Daldry, with book and lyrics by Lee Hall and choreography by Peter Darling.

So it is fitting that the four boys who share the lead role, chosen from more than 600 who auditioned, are drawn from all over the country.

Abiad is from Brisbane, Neilsen from Newcastle, Rogers from Canberra and Mardesic from Melbourne.

They all make their professional debuts in one of the most demanding roles in theatre, and they are taking it effortlessly in their elegant stride.

Casting for the show began in the middle of 2018 with the hopeful Billys put through rigorous rounds of auditions as hundreds were whittled down to just four.

Abiad, Neilsen, Rogers and Mardesic will now have a few weeks at home with their families before they reconvene in Sydney to begin rehearsals.

"The thing I am most excited about is rehearsals to start and then the shows," Neilsen said.

Abiad, who will wave the maroon flag representing Queensland in the show, said his great excitement will be taking the show home.

"It will be great when my family and friends are able to see it in Brisbane," he said.

Elton John saw the premiere of the film at Cannes in 2000 and immediately moved to create a stage adaptation, which has since played London, Broadway, Australia, Canada, South Korea, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Sweden, Japan and Israel.

Tickets for the Sydney season are on sale now. Melbourne tickets are on sale from June 5, and a waitlist for other cities is available on the show's official website.
