Karl Stefanovic's This Time Next Year has returned to television screens with almost half the amount of viewers it drew during its 2017 debut.

Nine's feel-good reality show, hosted by former Today co-host Stefanovic, launched its second season on Monday night to an average audience of 686,000 metropolitan viewers – down from the 1.28 million it pulled in two years ago.

With the addition of regional viewers, the numbers told a similar story: 951,000 people watched on Monday night, compared to 1.87 million who tuned into the previous season.

When This Time Next Year launched in 2017 it was the most-watched program of the evening and cemented Stefanovic's status as a prime-time ratings champion. This year, despite a strong lead-in from top-rating reality program The Block, the show was beaten by Network 10's Have You Been Paying Attention?, which two years ago drew in half as many viewers as This Time Next Year.

Host Karl Stefanovic ' s jaw dropped when she returned to the show 12 months later, Cassandra revealing she had shed almost half her original weight. The 35- year -old from Geelong, Victoria, had Karl close to tears as she recounted her decades-long struggle with her weight.

Monday marked Stefanovic's return to television screens after agreeing to "step off" the Today show in December 2018. His departure from breakfast TV came amidst a relentless media storm fuelled by Stefanovic's divorce from Cassandra Thorburn and subsequent marriage to shoe designer Jasmine Yarbrough.

Nine's program director Hamish Turner said in a statement he was very happy with This Time Next Year's return.

"Nationally it achieved almost one million viewers, retained much of the audience from The Block and had great viewer sentiment," he said.

Media analyst Chris Walton, from Nunn Media, said it was likely Nine would have forecasted a slight drop in viewers given it was a returning season and had not been on air for two years.

"In the current climate few programs get over 1 million metro viewers in one night," he said. "I'm sure they would have gone into this series with that context in mind. A drop would have been forecast, for sure, but a drop [in metro viewers] by half ... I imagine they'll be disappointed with that."

While the season two premiere of This Time Next Year was nowhere near as popular as its 2017 debut, Walton says attracting 686,000 average metropolitan viewers wasn't a terrible result.

"For a lot of shows now, 600,000 to 700,000 is not unusual," he said. "The death knell is never really on the first episode or the second episode. It's when a trend begins to emerge. If [the ratings] flatten out at what is considered to be a healthy level, that's fine. But if 600,000 becomes 500,000 becomes 400,000, that would be a different situation.

"Nine will be looking to see if this is a program a lot of people will pick up on 9Now today or tomorrow. Overnight metro viewers are much, much lower than what they have been because people can now view in different ways."
