There are about 1,500 roles for extras in Mortal Kombat and only some of those will be announced in the next few weeks, with other extras only being called on when relevant scenes are being shot.

Based on the video game launched in 1992, Mortal Kombat will start production next month and run until mid-December, bringing $70 million worth of investment to South Australia.

The movie deal comes off the back of a trip to Los Angeles that Premier Steven Marshall and Innovation and Skills Minister David Pisoni went on earlier this year to spruik the South Australian Film Corporation's Adelaide Studios.

"What we needed to do was get on the front foot and promote it to the world," Mr Marshall said.

"We worked very hard — we worked with New Line to bring this production here and we couldn't be more excited."

Mr Pisoni said he hoped the international franchise would attract more big-budget filming opportunities to the state.

"It's not just those names that you see on the screen that are involved in this production, there's hundreds of people behind the scenes," he said.

"There's close to 500 jobs in set production bringing work to South Australia."

Challenge for local film industry

Mortal Kombat's Australian casting director Angela Heesom said she was getting calls about the movie from across the country.

"We can't employ enough people at the moment to keep up with this — it's really, really exciting," she said.

"We're shooting in about a month's time so the heat is on now."

The Adelaide-based casting agent said it was a great opportunity for the local film industry and the biggest production they had ever cast in the state.

"We've done major TV series like Deadline Gallipoli, Anzac Girls, we've cast Storm Boy — all those iconic movies — [but] this is probably 10-fold what we've ever, ever faced before," she said.

Eight casting agents had their eye out for people with a variety of looks, including "the average Joe or Joanne", outlaws and those with extreme looks or body art.

Video game fans want to be in movie

Arwin Nidea had been looking forward to the casting call and dressed up in character with a trident and specialised contact lenses.

"I've been a really big fan of Mortal Kombat ever since the first game came out so it's very exciting to be filmed on Australian soil," he said.

"It's really fun — it's fantasy and superheroes and characters that people can relate to."

Tatt Boy Holden said he hoped his unique tattoos, body modifications and face and head art would help him land a part.

"I played the game a long, long time ago, probably back in the 1990s," he said.

"And there's my looks, my awesome personality, and my Terminator eye!"

New Line yesterday announced it had cast Ludi Lin, Sisi Stringer and Mechad Brooks in the film.

They will play alongside Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero.
