The film concentrates on the last year of Garland's life where she performed a series of live stage shows at the Talk of the Town in London. Her assistant Rosalyn Wilder had the difficult job of getting the often-intoxicated Garland ready to go on stage.

"I found it difficult to believe that someone whose worked at the highest levels and was internationally renowned and had made some of the most important films in cinematic history, would be facing financial difficulty or having a hard time booking work," Zellweger says.

"It was different," she recalls. "It was not something that I was ever challenged to do before. It was learning how to do something new. And being in denial that it was actually going to happen."

The late Judy Garland died at 47 after an accidental overdose of barbiturates. The film has many flashbacks to her adolescent life where she worked under Louis B. Mayer at MGM, and explores how that contributed to her reliance on pills in adulthood.

"Judy was indoctrinated into the studio system when women didn't have much agency," she says. "Had no agency really and didn't participate in the professional decisions that were made for him. There were the exceptions of course. In Judy's case, entering as a child, that really set the course for her."

"I understand the schedule. I understand what it takes. When I look at the piece of paper and do the math and figure out the levels of fatigue. I think about the films she'd make in a year, and that she sustained and continued to work in that capacity for such a long time, it amazes me," Zellweger says.

"When you throw live performance on top of that, and now I know. I know the cost of one of those belters, I can't imagine 30 of them in one night. It's extraordinary."

After dedicating obscene amounts of time and preparation to nailing this role, Zellweger reveals that if she was ever gifted with the rare opportunity to meet the late actress and singer, she would simply just observe her.

"I'd like to just listen. She just throws 'em, you know? She can just hit 'em back with the best of them. She was a spit fire, she was quite brilliant."
