The first thing I see when I wake up are my mum, my dad and my sisters — I'm one of five girls… So coming from a very loud house to a very lonely, travelling career where it can get noisy, but when you're in a room it can also be so quiet. I really needed to be around my family to have a really good gut-laugh, really good feed, and to experience my mum's cooking."

"Anyone who works in music is a storyteller and knows how difficult and how long it can take to begin to start telling your truth in your own story. It doesn't come easily," she says. "I think telling your truth does come with growth and experience.

"What makes my record, Hilda, so different from my other records is I had time to be with my family throughout the six years and understand why I fell out of love with music. But then I found music again because of my family, and reconnecting with who I am and my story and how I came to be who I am today."

The Journey is a live album by 2006 Australian Idol runner-up Jessica Mauboy , released on 24 February 2007 by Sony BMG Australia. The CD /DVD contains recordings of Mauboy 's live performances from her time in the top twelve on Australian Idol.

"I have a lot more understanding of myself and a lot more passion about who I am today as a grown woman," she tells 9Honey Celebrity. "As someone who is still learning, I taught myself through this record about continuously being brave and telling hurtful pains and growing pains. We all have that, and I think it's so nice to consistently and truthfully be honest with ourselves. That's what this record is about — about me being honest with myself, but also being honest with my creativity, my knowledge of music, and what my relationship is with music."

So raw and close to home is her new music that Mauboy named her album Hilda after her grandmother. The singer also paid tribute to her mother, Therese, by writing 'Little Things' about her mum.

"She broke into tears. She felt really proud that I was able to tap into my emotions and my relationship with her," reveals Mauboy, whose middle name is also Hilda. "I also dedicated this song to her because she wasn't able to have a mother at her important growing stages in life — her mother passed away when she was 10 and her mother, my grandmother, was 37 when she passed away. So they both lost each other in a way, if that makes any sense. When I look at my mother, I just think, 'Wow, I'm really grateful because I still have you.'"

Older, wiser and well-rested, Mauboy drew from the experiences she gained and learnt during her six-year hiatus when making Hilda — and it has paid off. The album has experienced early success with single 'Little Things' flying up the ARIA Charts, and it has since been nominated for two ARIAs, including Best Female Artist and Video of the Year. If only that 16-year-old girl who auditioned for Idol in the outback all those years ago could see her now.

"If I had to look back now at my 16-year-old self, I would say I feel extremely proud of her for stepping out... and for always keeping her family around real close, as I do now," Muaboy says. "I think she had her hat on and she had really good gut instincts, and I'm really proud of her because I wouldn't be doing what I am doing today without my family and without her."

Jessica Mauboy's fourth studio album Hilda is out now.
