Taylor Swift has opened up about the backstage drama that caused her public feud with music executive Scooter Braun.

Earlier this year, Swift accused Scott Borchetta — the president of her former record label, Big Machine Records — of selling Braun the rights to her music without her knowledge. Borchetta and Braun both claimed that Swift knew of the deal but didn't act on it, and so a game of He Said, She Said played out publicly between the trio.

Now, in a new interview with Music Week, Swift hinted that it was the alleged behind-the-scenes drama that led to her writing an open letter back in June, in which she accused Braun of "manipulative bullying".

This year, she will compete to surpass Michael Jackson in most AMAs ever for an artist, at 24 wins. She currently has 23.

"In my previous situation, there were creative constraints, issues that we had over the years," she told the publication. "I've always given 100 per cent to projects, I always over-delivered, thinking that that generosity would be returned to me. But I ended up finding that generosity in a new situation with a new label that understands that I deserve to own what I make."

The 29-year-old has since left Big Machine Records — a label she had been with since age 15 — and signed with Universal Music Group's Republic Records, which house artists such as Drake, Ariana Grande and Post Malone.

"That meant so much to me because it was given over to me so freely," Swift said of her new label under which she released her new album, Lover. "When someone just looks at you and says, 'Yes, you deserve what you want', after a decade or more of being told, 'I'm not sure you deserve what you want' — there's a freedom that comes with that. It's like when people find 'The One' they're like, 'It was easy, I just knew and I felt free.' And that made me feel I could make an album that was exactly what I wanted to make."

In Swift's now-famous open letter, she said she was "grossed out" that her music legacy was now in the wrong hands.

"I learned about Scooter Braun's purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I've received at his hands for years," she wrote. "Now Scooter has stripped me of my life's work, that I wasn't given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.

"This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term 'loyalty' is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says 'Music has value', he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it," she added.
