Charlie's Angels director Elizabeth Banks has addressed speculation about Kristen Stewart's role in the spy epic during an exclusive Digital Spy interview.

Many have suggested that Stewart's secret agent character Sabina Wilson might make history in the forthcoming movie as the first Angel to be depicted as LGBTQ+.

However, in our recent chat with Banks, the filmmaker explained that she was reticent about putting any kind of "label" on Sabina's sexuality in the script.

"It's interesting," Banks told us. "When I cast [Kristen Stewart], I just wanted her to be… I just felt like she's almost the way Kristen is. I don't feel there is a label that fits her.

"The only thing that was important to me was to not label it as anything. It's fine if the media wants to label it, I think that's okay, but I didn't do that. I just let her be herself in the film. Yeah, I know, and I am.

"But that was almost in response to someone who was like, 'What are all the boxes there in or whatever?' There was no mention of it in the script whatsoever."

  Charlie's Angels won't

Banks does seemingly have a more progressive take on the Charlie's Angels concept in mind. When asked to describe the film last year, Stewart saw it as "woke".

"It's still gonna be fun and Charlie's Angels-y," she added. "But it will also be current and modern."

Charlie's Angels will punch, kick and smash its way into UK cinemas on November 29, following its release in the US next Friday (November 15).
